William J. Bennett, writing in “Our Sacred Honor,” his anthology of Americana, notes that Thanksgiving originated in our early history as “a day of thanks and prayer and supplication and request for divine blessing.” He then adds pointedly: “A few helpings of those would go nicely and wouldn’t hurt with the stuffing and gravy of today.”

Bill Bennett will be one of my guests this Sunday on “Backbone Radio with John Andrews.” I’ll talk with him about how Thanksgiving has turned from a sacred into a largely secular holiday, and what that says about our country today. And we’ll get his thoughts about the gathering storm over President Bush’s policy in Iraq.

Hear it all on 710 KNUS in Denver or online at 710knus.com, 5-8pm November 20. Get in the conversation by calling 303 6969 1971, or email us at backboneradio@aol.com. I’ve been on Bennett’s “Morning in America” show, weekdays on 710 KNUS, but this is his first time to be on mine. As Claremont Institute colleagues we invite you to listen and take part.

My other guests will include Colorado’s new Secretary of State, Gigi Dennis… CU law professor Robert Nagel on the Supreme Court battle… and CU economist Barry Poulson on TABOR’s continuing relevance despite the election setback.

Plus a conversation with Lindsay Lloyd of the International Republican Institute about their democracy-building work in many nations. IRI sponsored my recent trip to the former Yugoslavia, which is described here and provides my column topic in the Denver Post this Sunday.

That’s Sunday at 5pm on Backbone Radio, the most principled, most patriotic, most faith-based, most Colorado-proud spot on your weekend radio dial. Please listen and participate!

Yours for self-government,
JOHN ANDREWS

SHOOTING STAR IN SUNSHINE STATE: Marco Rubio, former speaker of the Florida House who has come from 30 points down in the US Senate Republican primary to lead Gov. Charlie Crist by 15 points, is introduced by Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) at a fundraiser Andrews attended recently in Naples FL. (Does John perhaps need to invest in a better camera phone?)
