On this Sunday’s program for “Backbone Radio with John Andrews,” our topics and guests will bring the State of the Union idea closer to home for all of us. Bush’s Tuesday speech to Congress bears careful attention, of course. So we’ll dig into that. But also on this show, since America is after all a union of states, we will challenge listeners to take personal ownership of self-government right here in Colorado, right on your own street. That’s what backbone has to mean.

** What are the legislative Democrats up to? House Minority Leader Joe Stengel will tell us.

** How bad is the violence in public schools? We’ll ask researcher Pam Benigno.

** What’s it feel like for a Fort Collins cop to deploy (twice) as a Marine in Iraq? Brian Ivers, Aussie born and American by choice, will join me in studio.

** Is CU serious about intellectual diversity and color-blind fairness? Jessica Corry, who keeps publicly asking that, gives us her findings so far.

** What’s up with liberals piously invoking the memory of Barry Goldwater to demean President Bush? Former DU prof Andy Busch, now out at Claremont, has the surprising answer.

That’s 5-8pm this Sunday, Feb. 5, on 710 KNUS in Denver and 710knus.com around the world. (A web listener emailed us from Aruba during the show recently.) Call in with your two-cents at 303 696 1971. Or comment by email, during the show or right now, at backboneradio@aol.com.

There’s nothing else quite like Backbone Radio, the most principled, most patriotic, most faith-based, most Colorado-proud spot on the dial. I invite you to join us for another lively Sunday evening of fact, opinion, and insight.

Yours for self-government,
JOHN ANDREWS

Parting thought… Strong-government conservatism, the Bush vision as described
in Fred Barnes’s new book, clashes sharply with America’s limited-government tradition as spelled out by AEI president Chris DeMuth. The long Barnes book excerpt in 1/23 Weekly Standard is unfortunately not available online. My past radio guest Kevin Miller tackled this important issue of what’s-a-conservative-now? — at the Vanguard Forum on 2/3. And I’ll be interviewing DeMuth on the show one day soon.
