Decoration or desecration for 232 years of patriotic sacrifices?

Update after show: Bill Federer’s book, “What Every American Needs to Know about the Qur’an,” is here. And Judge Robert Dierker’s book on the runaway courts is at this link. Here is Frank Gaffney’s online petition about PBS covering for radical Islam. State Sen. Mike Kopp, Gulf War paratroop veteran, was our guest in place of Congressman Duncan Hunter, who had to reschedule because of an airline problem.

“We anticipate a black future for America. Instead of remaining united states, it shall end up separated states.” So said Osama bin Laden to ABC News in 1998. That’s the aim of Al Qaeda, our main enemy in Iraq. If their goal of nuclear strikes on US cities is achieved, political collapse for America as we know it may not be an empty threat.

The Aztlan radical movement in Mexico and the American southwest also envisions separating these United States by its own strategy of demographic and cultural subversion. And if the surrender of sovereignty packaged in the Kennedy-McCain immigration bill succeeds, Aztlan might turn out to be no fantasy either. What’s this have to do with Memorial (earlier Decoration) Day? (more…)

Apologizing to Jerry Falwell

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

By Dave Crater (crater@wilberforcecenter.org)

The passing of the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, someone at whom many of the glitterati and literati even among ostensible conservatives still love to scoff, has, as passings often do, led many others (myself included) to engage in some real soul-searching concerning what this man was about and what we all should learn from him and his legacy. Consider this more a confession than an argument. (more…)

Western Civ project at CU featured in Claremont briefing

The Denver office of the Claremont Institute held another in its public policy luncheon series on May 23, drawing a capacity audience to hear the latest on a newly launched Center for Western Civilization that cuts against the grain of leftist multiculturalism at the University of Colorado. The discussion was all the more timely after recent news stories about indoctrination of CU freshmen and a possible reprieve for Prof. Ward Churchill. Below are the program invitation and two earlier news stories about the center. Notice two GOP regents’ know-nothing comments at the very end. (more…)

TV, May: Kill the Senate immigration bill

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

The “Head On” debate between former state Sen. John Andrews (R) and former Denver councilwoman Susan Barnes-Gelt (D), seen daily on Colorado Public Television since 1997, began its May series this week. John said the Senate’s immigration bill deserves to die; Susan, though more sympathetic to the plan, predicted it won’t pass. Other topics this month include gasoline prices, abortion in the courts, the presidential race, and pies in the face (huh?).

1. IMMIGRATION SOLVED IN SENATE?

John: America is a nation of immigrants, but we are first of all a nation of laws. Without laws, we are not a nation at all. Immigration reform has to start with demanding respect for our laws by those who want to immigrate here. That means no amnesty for illegal aliens.

Susan: The issue of undocumented workers is complex as the recent US Senate proposal reflects. In addition to the thousands of small and large businesses dependent on this reliable workforce, the reality of families and stable communities plays a role. We cannot export 12 million residents. What’s meant by ‘rendering to Caesar’?

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

I’ve been struck by two thoughts lately, one thought expands on my April 1 post concerning the political leanings of Jesus, the second asks to what extent faith and politics can or cannot accompany each other. It may not be fashionable to say, but it is certainly true; you can legislate morality. In fact I’d actually contend that every law adopted from seat-belt laws to smoking bans to insurance mandates is morality codified, heck the most morally telling law we pass is the budget – “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). “Madam Chairman, Colorado is close to the front line of America’s unsecured southern border. We are a conduit for massive illegal traffic into this country. I dealt with the consequences as Senate President, 2003-2005. I bring you an appeal from our state to build the fence and secure the border first and foremost. I urge you not to reward lawbreakers with green cards and citizenship.” So began my testimony on Thursday afternoon before the House Immigration Subcommittee in Washington. (more…)

Road scholarship for Ritter?

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

(Andrews in Denver Post, May 20) Memo to Gov. Bill Ritter, from the Selection Board: Your application to become a Road Scholar for Colorado is welcomed by our board of taxpayers, businesses, and motorists. Transportation excellence is vital for economic growth, so to succeed politically, you will need a high mark in highways.

But you were graded “incomplete” on transportation by House Republican leader Mike May for the legislative semester that ended May 4. Unlike your predecessor, Bill Owens, who had a statewide highway bond on the ballot at this point in his freshman year, you have done no more than form a study panel. (more…)

A Coloradan’s immigration plea to Congress

Friday, May 18th, 2007

By John Andrews

On May 17 in Washington DC, the same afternoon Senate Republicans and the Bush administration were capitulating to Ted Kennedy and Democrats on amnesty for illegal aliens, I was urging the opposite policy as a witness before the House Immigration Subcommittee, with Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) presiding and Rep. Steve King (R-IA) as the ranking minority member. This was my testimony:

Mme. Chairman and committee, Colorado is close to the front line of America’s unsecured southern border. We are a conduit for massive illegal traffic into this country. I dealt with the consequences as Senate President, 2003-2005. I bring you an appeal from our state to build the fence and secure the border first and foremost. I urge you not to reward lawbreakers with green cards and citizenship. (more…)

Mindless legalism hurts war effort

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

By Dave Petteys (dpetteys@comcast.net)

In speaking with men who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, the common theme is “We are having to fight with our hands tied.” Why would this be? I experienced the same phenomenon in Vietnam. Without a doubt it is owing to organizations like the ACLU , the National Lawyer’s Guild and a hostile mainstream media who use adverse publicity and our legal system to harass the military while it’s trying to do its job. Desire, deficits, and light rail

Sunday, May 13th, 2007

(Andrews in Denver Post, May 13) Metro Denver’s ill-fated love affair with RTD has dragged on for a third of a century. Like many a dysfunctional relationship, it has featured cosmetics and broken promises on one side, gullibility and an open checkbook on the other. Can this marriage be saved? (more…)

‘Courage gone,’ saith the prophet

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007
(By John Andrews) Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the prophetic voice who helped bring down Soviet communism, gave one of the most important warnings of our time in his address at Harvard, June 1978. It is required reading for anyone who cares about America’s backbone. I was reminded of it last weekend on the radio when Dr. Jack Wheeler mentioned a lack of “civilizational confidence” among US elites, and when Nathan Chambers quoted Solzhenitsyn’s “decline in courage” passage (part of the Harvard address) before a Tom Tancredo campaign speech in Aurora. With my urging that you read the address in full, here is that passage:

The decline in courage may be the most striking feature which an outside observer notices in the West in our days. The Western world has lost its civil courage, both as a whole and separately, in each country, each government, each political party and of course in the United Nations. Such a decline in courage is particularly noticeable among the ruling groups and the intellectual elite, causing an impression of loss of courage by the entire society. (more…)

Would Tancredo pick McCain for VP?

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Memo to Tom: Be a Street Fighter

At the May 3 debate, imagine if Tom Tancredo had said: “When I am the Republican nominee for President, I will certainly consider choosing Senator McCain as my Vice President. The kind of running mate I’m looking for is a war hero like John McCain, or a crime-fighter like Rudy Giuliani, or a defender of traditional values like Mitt Romney.”

Our Colorado Congressman, bidding for the White House with scant chance of winning but a good chance for leverage over the immigration issue if he stays aggressive, landed a few jabs Thursday but didn’t hit his opponents with the kind of body blows it’s going to take. Mike Littwin, though distastefully snide as usual, had a point in his May 8 column on this. (more…)

“If we lost, who won?” Senator McCain’s question in the GOP presidential debate ought to be an alarm bell for everyone who thinks America can just walk away from Iraq, and really from a dangerous world, without consequences to ourselves and the future of freedom. To concede defeat for our cause is to grant victory to our enemies — Al Qaeda, Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, and the rest. Why would anyone want that? (more…)
