‘Go to the ant, thou sluggard’

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

(Title: Proverbs 6:6)

How do ants build vast underground cities without a chief engineer? How do bees build a hive and make honey without a leader? How do swarms of migrating birds or schools of fish seem to move as one organism? An article in the current National Geographic, “Swarm Behavior”, offers insights into the question of how the simple actions of individuals add up to the complex behavior of a group — but this 2007 author reveals an economic blind spot about what Adam Smith understood as early as 1776. Freedom and peace, inverted, become weapons against us

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

Commentators say “The war has divided our nation.” This is not really true. The Marxist Progressives and the Islamics have striven to divide our nation on purpose with years of concerted propaganda and pressure on elected officials to render “politically incorrect” the defense of our nation and the interests of its people. The Marxist Progressives and the Islamics seek to exploit our tradition of free speech for potentially ending this 231-year experiment in freedom and prosperity! If they are successful, we could be the first nation on earth to vote itself into slavery! (more…)

Up here in Backbone, we think of Independence Day as a season, not just a midweek blip. I’ve been dwelling all week with that magnificent freedom charter, the Declaration of Independence, starting when we read the whole thing aloud on last week’s show. In the Declaration, you see that our founders were thinkers and persuaders, men of reason and logic, as well as men unafraid to fight and force the outcome if necessary. They not only discerned truths from God and nature, they not only based government upon consent — they also thought globally with “a decent respect to the opinions of mankind,” and wrote of letting “facts be submitted to a candid world.” (more…)

Don’t let it become Dependence Day

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

By Brian Ochsner (baochsner@aol.com)

As we again celebrated Independence Day this week, I’ve thought about where America is as a country, and how the spirit of 21st-century America compares to the spirit of ’76. There are some good traits that have remained intact, but there’s also some other characteristics that have gone away from the original intent of the Founders. In some respects America is more independent than ever. But it’s also more dependent on government and American companies to provide them happiness, instead of enjoying the freedom to pursue their happiness. (more…)

The unique, and now endangered, Spirit of ’76

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

By Krista Kafer (krista555@msn.com)

In my youth, a mischievous friend asked if other countries have 4th of July. I can’t remember how I answered the trick question. Perhaps I was fooled. Of course other countries have a 4th of July, they just don’t celebrate it. Only in America is the 4th of July Independence Day. (more…)

Off went the Senate phone lines, down went the amnesty immigration bill, out went the funding for a “fairness” push against talk radio, right went the Supreme Court, and up went the Spirit of ’76. It was a good week’s work as June ends and July dawns, bringing once again our great national celebration of liberty and union, Independence Day. (more…)

Nightmare at Independence Hall

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

(Andrews in Denver Post 7/1 and on Townhall.com 6/30) The “Titanic” exhibit got me ready for time travel, and the big burrito did the rest. A chair at poolside, a snooze in the sun, and suddenly I was back at Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. All eyes were on John Adams as he addressed the Continental Congress:

“Fellow delegates, today our drafting committee submits the proposed Declaration of Independence. You have Mr. Jefferson’s text on your parchment laptops. Upon the motion of Lady Clinton from New York and Delegate Obama from the Illinois country, the draft underwent a political correctness audit by Bishop Bill Moyers of PBS Cathedral. Serious concerns arose. (more…)
