“A dying tribe” is what Denver Post business editor Al Lewis calls the business he’s in, newspapers. This week, under a frozen-smile headline, the Post reported its weekend circulation dropped 15% in the past year, while that of the Rocky Mountain News dropped 11%. Grasping for straws, the story said visits to the two papers’ jointly operated websites were up 22% in the same period. America’s government “needs to be completely eliminated and replaced,” according to the leader of a protest group intending to disrupt the Democratic convention in Denver this summer. They call themselves Re-create ‘68, fondly invoking the Chicago riots of 40 years ago. A recent profile on their chieftain, Glenn Spagnuolo, says he believes that “revolutionary politics are the best way to address” our national problems right now. Fair enough, Glenn. You can talk that way and even up to a point act that way, because it’s still a free country, no thanks to you and your radical pals. But we at Backbone Radio intend exercise that same freedom. It’s said that elections turn on voters’ perception of which candidate and party owns the future, which message convinces us of a better tomorrow. Yet the message is only as good as the messenger, and right now both Barack and Hillary seem to be prisoners of their distasteful past.
