It’s true that conservatives won few political victories, and the year gave us a cold shower economically, vindicating yet again Kipling’s realism in “The Gods of the Copybook Headings.” On the other hand, 12 months ago our goals included winning in Iraq, keeping the Clintons from reclaiming the presidency, and defending TABOR against Colorado’s spending lobby. How about that Bill Ritter? What a sense of humor. Off he went to Philadelphia this week with his begging bowl to hit up President-elect Obama for a billion or two in federal money for “Colorado’s two most pressing needs (which) are in transportation and energy infrastructure.” But as columnist Vince Carroll pointed out, that doesn’t mean the Governor has asked Coloradans to fund those things with our own votes and dollars. “We are the grateful Americans.” So begins my Thanksgiving column for the Denver Post, coming out this weekend. You know who you are. You might be a Republican or a Democrat or neither, a believer or a secularist, lucky in this world or unlucky. It doesn’t matter. You qualify because you’ve learned that life is better if lived with an attitude of gratitude. And being an American with eyes wide open to all the global contrasts in our favor, you feel a certain reverence at the approach of the only “made in America” sacred day of the year. So here’s a thought experiment: Suppose we could leaven the power struggle called politics with the grace called gratitude. (more…)

Starting Jan. 20, Barack Obama will be the only president Americans have, so we all wish him well in patriotism, for the country’s sake and by the Golden Rule. His election suggests some good things about America in the 21st century, as well as some concerning things. We’ll see how those sort out in 2009. But already, in what’s left of 2008, history isn’t standing still while BHO takes his victory lap. Among other developments, I see by the papers that investors are dumping stocks, citizens are buying up guns, and the Russians are snarling as if they missed the Messiah’s “heal the planet” memo. One other reaction that was already underway before McCain conceded Tuesday night is the soul-searching and fresh thinking by conservatives (more…)
