Bible Monday 1/13: Persecution

Studying this morning's four readings from the St. James Daily Devotional Guide (click to subscribe), I examined myself with these questions. Where is your self-examination leading today?

Psalms 34:1-22. Verse 2 KJV, by what attitudes and actions can I boast in God today? How can I at the same time be humble?

Deuteronomy 13:1-18. Death penalty for idolaters. How does this accord with Jesus’ command and example of loving our enemies—or with today’s ideas of religious freedom and tolerance?

Hebrews 7:1-10. A difficult passage for many of us. What is tithing or the priesthood or Abraham to me? To what authority shall I submit myself today, and what difference does it make?

Matthew 5:1-12. Verses 11 and 12, why does Jesus speak twice of persecution? How relevant is this to my comfortable Christian life?
